Temperament is the use of a tuning system that slightly alters the sizes of the pure intervals of just intonation in order to meet one or more other requirements. The four main tuning systems are equal temperament, Pythagorean, just intonation and mean-tone temperament. In equal temperament, the dominant tuning system in use today, the frequency ratio between each pair of adjacent notes on a keyboard is equal.
