Repeat Sign Definition

The repeat sign, or repeat barline, is a type of barline that tells a musician to return to a previous location and repeat the just-played music. It is similar in appearance to the end barline, except that it is accompanied by two dots, one above the other, resembling a semicolon. When used at the start of a passage to be repeated the two dots are to its immediate right, and when used at the end of the repeated passage the two dots to its immediate left. The absence of the former means that the repetition should begin at the start of the current movement or at the beginning of the work if there are no movements.
