A concerto grosso is similar to a conventional concerto except that instead of a single soloist there are two or more soloists who pass the melody among themselves and the orchestra or a small ensemble. Concerti grossi emerged in the late seventeenth century and were very common during the Baroque era. However, they were subsequently replaced by the solo concerto and became nearly extinct until a modest revival in the twentieth century.
