Composer Definition

A composer is a person who creates original music. Composers in the common practice period generally wrote all or most of their scores by hand by themselves prior to their sending them to their publisher, although some had apprentices or scribes fill in some repetitive sections. However, the way composers work changed considerably during the latter part of the twentieth century as a result of advances in technology and the development of new types of music. For Western art music, most composers now make extensive use of computers to create their scores, and for some art music it has become increasingly common to create the music directly using synthesizers and recording the output without creating any scores. In the case of movie music and popular music it is common for composers to just develop melodies and other ideas and then hire specialists to provide the orchestration.
